What is a temporomandibular disorder (TMD)?

The temporomandibular joints connect the two joints in your lower jaw to the skull. Essentially, they are the joints that allow the mandible to move up and down, side to side, and forward and back. If you suffer severe pain in your jaw you may have a Temporomandibular disorder (TMD). TMDs are conditions that cause serious pain and discomfort to the joint and muscles that control your jaw movement. TMDs cause the jaw to not function properly. In most cases, determining the cause of TMD is difficult as several things can lead to it including excessive strain on the jaw joints from chewing and talking.

What signs and symptoms should I be aware of?

Early detection is critical for oral diseases and disorders. If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should schedule an appointment with a general dentist who can properly diagnose TMD. The following include but are not limited to TMD symptoms:

  • Jaw pain
  • Soreness
  • Dizziness
  • Persistent headaches
  • Limited mouth motions
  • Facial muscle spasms
  • Locking of the jaw
  • Clenching or grinding of the teeth
  • Popping or crackling of the jaw
  • Trouble opening or closing your mouth

If you are diagnosed with a TMD, depending on your age and medical history, there are different treatment options. Depending on the severity of your diagnosis, it may go away without the need for treatment as most temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are temporary. In some cases, however, the symptoms can last for years. More severe cases are more difficult to treat. Sometimes a dentist will recommend getting an orthopedic appliance such as a night guard that helps prevent your teeth from grinding and hitting each other while you sleep. In other cases, they may recommend taking pain medications or undergoing physical therapy. In addition, a dentist may recommend using relaxation techniques to loosen the jaw. If you are diagnosed with TMD you may require oral surgery. To ensure you receive the proper treatment for TMD, it is critical to visit your general dentist.
