What is a Fluoride Treatment?

In today’s day and age, many people question whether or not they should use fluoride. We are here to tell you, first and foremost, that not only is fluoride safe, but it is also highly beneficial to your overall oral health. Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral found in water sources, and for optimal dental health, you should use fluoride toothpaste, mouthwash, and receive a fluoride treatment at your dental visits. Why do my teeth need fluoride?

To start, regularly using fluoride is perhaps the #1 way to prevent cavities. Additionally, fluoride also repairs enamel, prevents tooth decay, and more. Why is it important to repair enamel? Your teeth require calcium and phosphorous to stay strong, not become sensitive to hot and cold sensations, and to not decay, and when we lose tooth enamel, it can lead to a wide array of oral problems down the road. Fortunately, when you use fluoride, and especially when you receive a fluoride treatment, remineralization occurs, which helps repair lost enamel and stave off tooth decay. You are at a higher risk of tooth decay if you have poor oral hygiene, use drugs or alcohol, do not regularly see a dentist, or otherwise have a high level of bacteria in your mouth.

What is a fluoride treatment like?

When we give our patients professional fluoride treatments, they often remark how thorough, yet how quick and painless the treatment was.  We may either administer the fluoride treatment in gel form, as a solution, or as a varnish. After the treatment, you should feel refreshed, in no pain at all, and the only thing you may have to do is refrain from eating, rinsing, or drinking for about 30 minutes to assist the fluoride’s absorption into your teeth. Generally, you will only have to have this treatment twice a year, however, if you are at high risk for certain periodontal issues, your dentist may recommend that you have several professional fluoride treatments per year. For any additional questions, please do not hesitate to give our experienced New Jersey dental team a call today. We are always here to help.
