Maintaining optimal dental hygiene is paramount to leading an overall healthy life. Though you may brush, floss, and use mouthwash every day, you may still be missing out on an important part of dental hygiene–replacing your toothbrush. When you see anything, whether it be food or otherwise, that has gone past its expiration date, you most likely throw it out. However, toothbrushes, rather obviously, do not come with expiration dates, so how do you know when it’s time to get a new one? This short guide will help answer that question. Please continue reading and reach out to our experienced New Jersey dental team to learn more.
When should I get a new toothbrush?
The American Dental Association recommends that you change your toothbrush at least every three months. Why? First and foremost, toothbrushes become less and less effective as the months go by, which means you may be brushing your teeth, but it is no longer doing its job. Additionally, fungus, germs, and bacteria can build up on the bristles, which is why if you recently had a cold or another sickness, it is always best to replace your toothbrush afterward. A helpful side note: if you notice your bristles are beginning to change color, that indicated your brush may be accumulating mold–definitely time for a change!
What will happen if I don’t replace my toothbrush?
When you do not replace your toothbrush, it may lead to tooth decay. How? Since the bristles are no longer effectively removing plaque, which causes gingivitis, you put yourself at risk of serious infection down the road. Furthermore, as bacteria, fungus, and germs collect on your toothbrush, you drastically increase your risk of sickness. Simply put, the easiest and best thing you can do for your teeth and for yourself is changing your toothbrush every 3 months, just as the American Dental Association recommends.
