Can Poor Oral Health Lead to Dementia?

When we brush and floss our teeth, what exactly are we doing? Though this may sound like a silly question, it isn’t. Most of us maintain our oral health for clean, white, shiny teeth. Though this, along with overall oral health is the primary benefactor of keeping up with our dental hygiene, the truth is, good oral health extends far beyond our mouths.

For example, did you know that good oral health may significantly reduce your chances of developing Alzheimer’s Disease? Recent studies have attributed Alzheimer’s to poor oral health, and though we still have a long way to go before we can absolutely say this is true, the data so far is quite promising.

The very basic outline of the recent studies conducted in 2019 is as follows:

Essentially, various scientists conducted an experiment where they analyzed the brain tissue of various deceased persons with Alzheimer’s disease. These people’s brain tissue contained Porphyromonas gingivalis, which is one of the main causes of gingivitis. When teeth and gums are insufficiently cared for, this bacteria enters the bloodstream. Again, though there is not a definite causal relationship, it seems more and more that poor oral hygiene can absolutely lead to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Regardless of whether poor oral hygiene does, in fact, play a role in developing Alzheimer’s, optimal dental health is extremely important. That is why you must ensure you care for your teeth daily, as well as see your trusted local dentist for routine checkups, at least every 6 months.
