What are the Benefits of Using Fluoride?

Many people come to the dentist and ask about the importance of fluoride. Fluoride, as you probably know, is not without controversy. However, despite certain past claims of fluoride being unsafe, we now recognize fluoride not only as safe, but as extremely beneficial to your overall dental health. If you would like to learn more about the benefits of regular fluoride use, please read on and speak to our knowledgeable staff.

Should I use fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash?

Many people wonder how much fluoride they should incorporate into their daily lives. Generally, it is recommended to use a fluoridated toothpaste at least twice daily. Not only can fluoride toothpaste help prevent cavities, but it can also prevent tooth decay and strengthen weak spots and exposed roots in your gums.

Additionally, if you are susceptible to cavities, you should consider using a fluoride mouthwash to help decrease the risk of getting one. However, you must know how to properly use a fluoride mouthwash to reap its benefits to the fullest. You must always use the amount instructed on the label. From there, you simply swiftly swish the mouthwash for about 30 seconds to one minute and then spit it out. It is always best to avoid eating or drinking any foods for about a half-hour after using the mouthwash.

Is fluoride safe for babies?

Fluoride is perfectly safe for babies, though we recommend adjusting their amount of fluoride intake according to their size. When your child begins growing his or her first baby teeth, you should introduce your child to a small kids-sized toothbrush, using a tiny dab of fluoride toothpaste about the size of a grain of rice. This will help reduce the amount of toothpaste your child swallows, while still introducing him or her to a key component of dental hygiene from a young age.

Should I get a fluoride treatment?

Fluoride treatments can be extremely beneficial, especially if your tap water does not contain fluoride. Fluoride treatments only take a few minutes and can be administered as a gel, solution, or varnish. All you have to do is refrain from eating for a half-hour and you’ll be good to go!
