Chances are when you wake up in the morning, or in the hours after a nice meal, you feel a residue on your teeth. It’s sticky, filmy, and downright gross. Worst of all, it builds up on your teeth and in your gumline, and, in the long run, if you let it go untreated, it may cause serious dental problems down the line. When you do not sufficiently brush, floss, and see the dentist regularly, you will build up plaque that eats away at tooth enamel, leading to decay, which can eventually cause gum disease, gingivitis, or, in the worst cases, periodontal disease. The bottom line is the plaque is no joke, and it is your responsibility to take care of it. Please continue reading and speak with our knowledgeable New Jersey dental team to learn more.
What foods cause plaque?
Nearly all foods cause plaque, however, the most common culprits are starchy foods, such as bread and potato chips. Sweet and acidic foods also, such as citrus, sticky candies, or soda are known to cause serious plaque buildup. Avoiding foods high in carbohydrates is your best bet.
How do I get rid of plaque?
To get rid of plaque on your teeth, you should brush, floss, and use mouthwash on a daily basis. Brushing twice a day is critical, as is flossing at least once a day. When choosing your mouthwash, ensure you use one that is high in fluoride. Additionally, as mentioned earlier, eating a balanced diet and avoiding the aforementioned foods and drinks can go a long way as well. If your dentist approves, use tartar-control toothpaste with fluoride, as this also helps zap plaque away. Do not smoke or use tobacco products! These are terrible for your teeth and for the rest of your body. Finally, ensure you see your dentist at least twice a year so he can give your teeth the professional treatment and cleaning they deserve and need.
